I recorded my first VideoSong*. The song is a classic Western Swing (I love that western swing stuff!) number from the 50’s by the GreatJimmy Bryant & Speedy West. To try and capture that 50’s essence I thought it would be fitting to record the audio on 4 track tape (we all know I love 4 track tape). I captured all of the video with my iPhone 4s. The initial idea was to have 4 shots (one for each instrument) and have them all play at once in a static, 4 in one, screen in screen, type of shot. Well, as luck would have it, my tape player and my iPhone don’t play at the same speed which turned the initial idea into a weird Steve Reich inspired phase piece with things getting really quickly out of sync. So this forced me to change my simple approach to one that would allow me to better mask the fact that my video and audio are at two completely different speeds, hence the chopped up video (I mean I would have been really happy keeping it simple). While the syncing is still a little weird I have not the patience or processing power to get it perfect. I like it though. It gives it another level of 50’s vibe. Now I know better for next time, tape+iPhone=Headache.
A VideoSong is a new medium with 2 rules:
1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).
2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds).
